You’ll see how to identify which parts will interchange, so you won’t be confused about what to use and when. BLACK-CONNECTOR SOLENOID BLOCK The first RFE transmission was the 45RFE, debuting in 1999. By 2001, the 45RFE evolved from a four-speed to a five-speed, referred to as the 545RFE, following computer control modifications. Both versions employed a black-connector solenoid block (figure 1 ABOVE ) between 1999 and 2003. Exclusive to the black-connector solenoid block are two components: the transmission range sensor plate . This is not  compatible with other solenoid blocks. Consequently, it is advised to consistently transition from the black-connector solenoid block to the white-connector variant. Originally, the black-connector solenoid block was matched with a type-1 transmission range sensor plate ( figure 2  ABOVE ). To identify the suitable TRS plate, measure the pocket depth—a precise fit for the black-connector solenoid block is achieved with a depth of 0.118” (3.0mm).
